Planned Parenthood to the Rescue!
New Orleans, LA (LifeNews.com) -- Victims of Hurricane Katrina are battling rising waters, destroyed homes and are seeking basic necessities like food, water and shelter. On Wednesday, Planned Parenthood sent an announcement to its members that the nation's largest abortion business is available to help -- with free morning after pills and birth control. Planned Parenthood Federation of America interim president Karen Pearl lauded her group's efforts in a recent email to its supporters. "As Hurricane Katrina ripped through the southeastern United States, Planned Parenthood [is] there to offer one free month of birth control or one free emergency contraception kit to women from Louisiana and Mississippi,"
Yeah, because we all know that THAT'S what's on everyone's mind down there. I guess I should be happy that they aren't offering free abortions to all the women.

Also, DemCentral ABC did a special report on NewOrleans last night. They pulled out all the stops and used the disaster to screem their "talking points" in our faces, and to blame Bush and the Reps for everything. They played the race card so heavily and so blatantly, my stomach was turning within a minute, beyond which I could no longer watch.
It was a truly sickening display of how the parasitic Dems use misfortune to rape, uh, I mean reap political hay. The only time they care is when your hurting. And, in exchange for your vote, they'll pretend they feel your pain, too (when they're campaigning).

APSA Blogging, Day 3: Hangovers
Hung out with some fellow anonymous political scientist bloggers last night. We met up with the not-so-anonymous
Daniel Drezner. He's good people.
Next door, Cornell West was at a party. Wait, that guy is a political scientist. I thought he was a hip-hop artist or something?
Two worlds colliding. You know about the worlds. A non-blogging, not-in-the-know about "Rusty Shackleford", friend from grad school was hanging out at the party with us. Turns out, he and Steve the Llamabutcher know each other. Small world. Awkward, since none of could talk about blogging around him. Best to keep academic world and blog worlds apart.
If you have to make a choice between going to a party hosted by libertarians or conservatives, go to the libertarian party. Just trust me on this one.
Best. Advice. Ever: Never challenge Steve the Llama Butcher or Professor Chaos to a drinking game.

owned by Hugo Chavez.
Originally, CITGO started out as Cities Service Corporation in Indian Territory--the eastern half of what is now Oklahoma, before 1907. It's based in Houston, but owned by Caracas.
There are some things of ours I don't think our adversaries should be able to buy. I'm glad China was stopped from buying UNOCAL. So where was Clinton on the CITGO sale in the 1990's? Can we regain control of the rest of our energy supply?

EDIT: Oops. Looks like that was Bush #1. That was well before Chavez came to power in 1998; he just got control of one of America's biggest oil companies in the process.
UPDATE: Hyscience says let's boycott Citgo. Seems pretty reasonable to me, although it may hurt a lot of businessmen in the process. Still, a widespread boycott could bring the share price down low enough that an American interest can buy it back.

You can't boycott Citgo. Half of the fuel in Lake Charles LA is refined at the Citgo refinery. Do you know where the fuel you bought at the Texaco station this morning was bought? No you don't. In New Orleans only the Mobil and Murphy gas refineries are shut down. Motiva is awaiting power and personel to get back on line but in the mean time there is no fuel for any stations that normally get their loads from this area. Refineries and loading racks sell fuel that gets additives blended as it loads to make it that branded fuel you put in your tank.

I'll point out my age and tell you that the Mobil gas stations where I lived all used to be Sinclair (the dinosaur logo) and gas, when I was 10 years old, was $.22 a gallon. Cigarettes were $.28 and a loaf of bread was about a quarter. My dad used to send me to the corner store to buy his Pall Malls for him when I was in 6th grade.

Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."
Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East (if you buy from texaco or other american owned oil company). There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.
Instead of using government to help the rich and the corporate, as Bush does, Chavez is using the resources and oil revenue of his government to help the poor in Venezuela. A country with so much oil wealth shouldn't have 60 percent of its people living in poverty, earning less than $2 per day. With a mass movement behind him, Chavez is confronting poverty in Venezuela. That's why large majorities have consistently backed him in democratic elections. And why the Bush administration supported an attempted military coup in 2002 that sought to overthrow Chavez.
So this is the opposite of a boycott. Call it a BUYcott. Spread the word.
Of course, if you can take mass transit or bike or walk to your job, you should do so. And we should all work for political changes that move our country toward a cleaner environment based on renewable energy. The BUYcott is for those of us who don't have a practical alternative to filling up our cars.
So get your gas at Citgo. And help fuel a democratic revolution in Venezuela.

Excellent roundtable. Most of these academic panels put me to sleep. Not this one. Unfortunately, the guy sitting in front of me wasn't as into the talks as me. Speaker 1: Adam Wolfson, former editor of Public Interest
Wolfson began by talking about how Bush outrages both Realists and Idealists. Later, Wolfson would claim that Bush is a Hamiltonian Realist. Hamiltonian Realists believe that the character of opposing regimes is somehow connected to our national security.
Bush is also not a Wilsonian Idealist, as some on the Right like to accuse him --think Pat Buchanan. This is evidenced by Bush's willingness to selectively apply his idealism. Think Cuba. After the Cold War, Cuba ceased to be threat. Bush's unwillingness to invade Cuba does not reveal a hypocrisy, as many on the Left like to accuse, rather it is consistent with a Realist foreign policy. No threat, no need for regime change. Iraq, on the other hand, was a threat and therefore only by regime change could we ensure the long-term national interests of the country.
Wolfson reminded us, though, that the cause-effect relationship between democracy, peace, and our national interest is a theory we are trying to test. It could very well be that the theory is wrong. Bringing democracy to the Middle East may not, in fact, bring peace and serve our interests in the long run. Let's hope the theory is right.

I think the left has gone so far left that they're having a hard time defining themselves without alluding to the fact (or even admitting to themselves) that the most extreme of the left is coming full circle and emerging on the extreme right end of the spectrum.
There are those who will deny it, but even the bulk of the right, over decades, has shifted toward center. And the bulk of the left, just to maintain a respectable distance, has shifted even farther left.
If the trend continues, we "will" end up in a fascist/communist state.

The Hurricane did more damage than I expected. Would you be insulted by the lack of trust in your countrys ability to handle it's own crisises if foreign governments offered assistance in fixing the area effected?

Martial Law Declared in New Orleans

At one point, officers stranded on the roof of a hotel were fired at by criminals on the street.
The Times-Picayune newspaper reported that the gun section at a new Wal-Mart had been cleaned out by looters.
Authorities said an officer was shot in the head and a looter was wounded in a shootout.
Opportunistic thugs are obviously taking advantage of the lack of police protection. As I recall, the situation in Somalia back in the early 1990s was similar. In that case, efforts to provide relief were negated by gangs of armed thugs directed by warlords. All that appears to be missing in New Orleans are the warlords.

I wouldn't worry too much about Rooster, his only concern is probably that they won't stand still long enough for a good headshot.
Speaking of which, I took the CETME out to the range last night, and at 50 yards from standing and kneeling, I found I can still make a fair number of headshots (75%) in rapid fire mode of 1 round per second, and most center mass shots were killers. Not bad, considering that I'm using 7.62 NATO in a heavy rifle, and haven't done a lot of combat shooting in a while. I only wish I was on a rooftop in New Orleans with it right now, I'd teach the bastards to act like human beings.

Hehe... $3.00 is still half of what it has always cost here. $5-$6 for gallon for 95octane, diesel oil around $4/gal. 80% taxes those prices, gov. wants to make money from buying foreign fuel... If you fill some forms at KELA to prove you absolutely must have the car for work, fuel becomes technically free (omakustannehinta: $0.50/gal) no matter how much you drive.

Out of curiosity, I mooked around to see what global reaction has been to the damage wrought by Hurricane Katrina.
Interestingly, the same Germany that produced the noxious commentary of a Minister indicating that the US basically had it coming given our turndown of Kyoto, is also the home of Der Spiegel which had some interesting links. First, was a set of letters to Der Speigel remarking on German commentary about the Hurricane. Similarly, Der Spiegel also ran a bit about the same remarks by the German government official who shot his mouth off - in this article they didn't seem to either condone or condemn the statement, but simply related his defense of his argument.
The other interesting articles are these: Disaster 101: Why Europe Hasn't Jumped to Help Katrina's Victims which has a few interesting bits:
"Yet, in Europe, the Web sites of major aid organizations -- including international branches of the Red Cross in Germany, France, England etc. -- don't even mention its existence. Instead, they continue to highlight such worthy causes as hunger in Niger, ongoing aid for victims of December's South Asian tsunami and, in the French case, an airline crash in Venezuela. But the US Gulf Coast is nowhere to be found. It begs the question: Don't the desperate people of Louisiana and Mississippi need the world's help and attention?"
The article does hem and haw about the question, but the fact that it was raised is interesting in and of itself. But the more warming bit was the article linked at bottom which had links to sites taking donations for Hurricane victims.
At any rate, I got curious and decided to do a quick survey of how folks are mobilizing (if at all) to support Hurricane victims.

This is the same country where when they asked University Students what they thought of Americans and Russians, the Russians fared better:

Uh, Sandpiper? I think the German Cheesed++k got on the bandwagon for browbeating Bush over the hurricane because he was reading way too much KOS and he thought KOS was cool or something. (Maybe he was flirting.) Kos, Americablog, and some other idiot who I can't remember right now seemed to be the first brainfarts on this side of the pond to blame Bush for the storm before the storm even hit.

While I'm glad Fred was able to vindicate Finland, it's just plain silly to suggest our government would be upset if others offer help. When individuals are in dire need from such a crisis, pride takes a backseat.

Dagnammit! Can't Fred read Finnish? Of course he can't... Oh well, there's a "donate money"-button and a "volunteer to help"-button on the left side of the page, eventhough the article gives the impression that Red Cross has already deployed a full helping operation (53'000 sheltered, 350'000 fed by 'em, also giving out rations in Baton Rouge and Montgomery).

Sure, I found the link to give, but every red cross page has that. There is no disaster page for this event.
Don't get me wrong, I am not harping on the Finnish Red Cross. They do good work. It is just that for every tragedy that strikes, they and other aid groups, like UNICEF, hit the streets with their collections cans hassling people for money.
Then there are the odd campaigns. Take the summer condom program (kesakumi) Here is the homepage for that, in Finnish, but on the right, if you click one of the small pictures, you can send a condom web postcard to someone you love.

Don't expect much from European individuals. When I lived in Switzerland in the 80s, I sent the IRC SF 100 for some disaster (which I can't remember). I actually got a letter of thanks from the IRC president himself! And in the letter, he implied that they didn't get much money from individuals (which I inferred from the fact that he took the time to send me a letter of thanks).

I don't think Europe excepted this crisis to reach such a magnitude. Hurricanes are one thing but cities under sea level getting flooded? ..Anyway, the least Europe could do is to offer some specialized help and send search teams among other things. The US has been saving Europe's *ss for almost a century, maybe now would be a good time to give something back?

Creepy, your gov. actually did something I suggested and the White House pronounced that all help from abroad is welcome... Right after which all those countries/organisations offered help. And before you got help Bush said: "Usa can take care of itself"... Which means the people want help, but Bush doesn't? So foreign help is against Bush, but not against anyone else. That's an excellent arrangement, even allows Muslim countries to help.

I'm getting tired of all this...after all, the residents were forewarned three days before the hurricane hit! Whoever remained behind is nuts! Why couldn't state officials make an announcement for a mass exodus and have buses ready to bring the people to other safe places? They're doing it now, anyway, why couldn't this be available before?
Stupid is as stupid does. Anyone with half a brain would have scrammed. Staying behind was stupid! There's nothing left the city is virtually inoperable...even if your home came through unscathed, you're still fucked.

Please refer to this link as to what Europe is doing in regard of the Katrina Storm.
It saddens me that ignorance and lack of information brings people in here to bash Europe. Even tinny counties like Luxemburg and Portugal are helping. This last one sent 500,000 barrels of oil it took from its reserve ... in the meantime we here in the US take 5 days to debate whether or not to use part of our reserve.
Keep the arrogance and the ingratitude America and one day you WILL be left alone indeed with no one else to blame then yourself. It is Pathetic to see how criticism comes easy when you don't know what you are talking about.
